The American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana is looking for a Communications Coordinator to increase the ACLU of Louisiana’s visibility strategically and proactively across Louisiana. A successful candidate will advocate for positive changes in the civil rights and civil liberties landscape and grow the ACLU of Louisiana’s political power to energize the fight for civil liberties and protect our hard-won victories. The position is based in New Orleans but may require periodic travel throughout the state. The position will report directly to the Communications Director and work closely with the Legal and Advocacy teams.

Position Overview

The Communications Coordinator is a skilled multimedia communications professional that supports and enhances the organization’s strategic communications, digital outreach, and public advocacy efforts on a range of civil rights and civil liberties issues. Under the supervision of the Communications Director, the Communications Coordinator translates our legal, policy, and public education work into powerful multimedia content to inspire, inform, and move people to action.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Support and assist the organization’s internal and external communications programs
  • Collaborate with the Communications Director and contracted agency to identify high-impact opportunities to increase the visibility of our advocacy, legal, and legislative work, and to generate web traffic, email list, and social media audience growth
  • Collaborate with the legal and advocacy teams and research policies to write and speak comfortably about issues related to civil liberties to communicate with the media and members of the press, as well as write testimony, editorials, talking points, action alerts, social media and blog posts, and more
  • Monitor and analyze media coverage and online engagement to maximize engagement opportunities and improve communications strategies
  • Assist Communications Director with press events and rallies, including preparing speakers, logistics, signage, outreach items, advertising, and more
  • Provide in-person technical assistance at events, and real-time documentation with photography and social media
  • Develop, maintain, and produce certain communications deliverables, including media training documents and media contact database
  • Other projects and duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Exceptional writing, storytelling, and copy editing skills
  • Bachelor’s Degree and at least two years professional experience in communications or journalism. Sufficient relevant professional experience can be substituted for education.
  • A profound and well-articulated commitment to civil liberties and the mission of the American Civil Liberties Union
  • Detail oriented with strong follow through, demonstrated ability to solve problems, ability to meet tight deadlines and manage resources effectively
  • Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office, WordPress, and additional web-based applications as needed
  • A keen eye for design, page layout, and general presentation
  • Solid understanding of internet tools, processes and techniques for membership development, advocacy campaigns, list building, and social networking
  • Professional experience maintaining a website and designing and posting social media content is highly desirable
  • Effective and proven team process and project management experience
