In August 2020, the American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana sued for the release of public records about a secretive state panel that was intended to facilitate the temporary release of vulnerable people from state prisons amid COVID-19.

We brought this case on behalf of a class of incarcerated individuals at the Oakdale facility, and requested immediate release of the Petitioners and Class Members, coupled with appropriate support and conditions upon release, as informed by public health expertise.

Prisoners at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola (Angola) needlessly suffer from chronic pain, permanent injury, and preventable sickness and death as a result of prison officials’ failure to provide constitutionally adequate medical care.

In September 2019, the American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana intervened on behalf of a local photographer who was being sued for defamation after documenting a New Orleans school principal wearing Nazi-associated symbols at a public protest of the removal of Confederate monuments.

On May 30, 2019 the Southern Poverty Law Center and the American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana filed against the Trump administration for categorically denying release to hundreds of people who are languishing in immigration prisons after lawfully seeking asylum in the U.S.

Asserting that New Orleans’ “clean zones” unconstitutionally restrict the right to free speech, the American Civil Liberties Union of Louisiana filed a lawsuit challenging the 2018 arrest of environmental activist Luke Fontana.
