BATON ROUGE - The ACLU of Louisiana condemns the Senate and Governmental Affairs committee’s decision to vote against SB 365, a state voting rights protection bill.

It is clear this legislature has no interest in fair, representative voting. This is not the first attack on fair representation Louisiana legislators have perpetrated.

As the Supreme Court weighs a decision in Louisiana v. Callais, the last remaining voting rights protections for minority communities hang by a thread. Other states are heading in the right direction by enshrining democratic principles through voting rights protections. Louisiana must do the same.

Today was a missed opportunity for our state. Instead, legislators continue to humiliate our people by failing to represent their constituents and the fundamental principles of democracy.

“Let me make this clear: this vote does nothing but galvanize the people,” said Alanah Odoms, executive director of the ACLU of Louisiana. “It’s more clear than ever that the people of Louisiana want voting rights and do not want a supermajority that carves up districts on the whim of its governor. This fight is far from over.”
