NEW ORLEANS - Alanah Odoms, executive director of the ACLU of Louisiana today issued the following statement:

“We at the ACLU of Louisiana are deeply concerned and shocked by the death of 37-year-old Harold Brooks at Angola State Penitentiary.

Corrections officers are trained to deescalate. The use of force, even when legally authorized, should never end in death.

We are calling for full transparency in the West Feliciana Parish Sheriff’s Office investigation and demanding that any video footage of the incident be made public.

The people of Louisiana have a right to know what happens behind the walls of our public institutions, including state-operated prisons. For too long, our state has witnessed a disturbing pattern of neglect, abuse, and fatal violence against incarcerated people at the hands of sheriff’s deputies, state corrections officers, and private prison staff.

The public deserves clear answers about what happened to Harold Brooks and whether those responsible will be held accountable.”
