CLASS ACTION SUIT ON BEHALF OF PROTESTERS BRUTALIZED ON THE CRESCENT CITY CONNECTION HEADS TO FEDERAL COURT

NEW ORLEANS — After years of litigation, a proposed class action lawsuit on behalf of peaceful protesters brutalized by New Orleans Police Department officers during a 2020 demonstration will finally have its day in court. Williams et al. v. Ferguson et al. is scheduled for a hearing Tuesday, May 13 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
The lawsuit is being brought by the ACLU of Louisiana and Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP on behalf of protesters who gathered on the Crescent City Connection in the days following the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police. Rather than protect demonstrators exercising their First Amendment rights, NOPD officers attacked them. The suit seeks to hold responsible officers, their supervisors, and those who enabled the violence accountable for systemic discrimination against protesters standing up against police misconduct.
